Chocolate Mocha Krinkles
Chocolate Mocha Krinkles
Although these aren't a family recipe passed down for generations, these are one of my families new favorites or at least it has been for the last 10 years or so. I have seen similar ones called Mexican Wedding cookies or even Spicy Hot Cocoa cookies. The secret ingredient of course is just a bit of black pepper to give a little zip to the chocolate. When we eat these I envision the Aztecs drinking their spicy hot chocolate and dipping these cookies into it... Yum! Ok so that may be chocolate overload if there is such a thing.. which is why I just envision it and haven't tried it yet. But maybe we will give it a try this year!

Ingredients
Yes I know before you even say it, that is a lot of ingredients for cookies! But trust me, once you make these you will see why you won't mind making them again and again. The recipe as follows is for a single batch... I always make a double batch as one batch is never enough with my family LOL! So when you see the pictures and see how full the bowls are and how many cookies were made, just remember that if you make a single batch it won't look as full as my pictures.
Ingredients
1 1/3 cup Packed brown sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup sour cream
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 3/4 cups flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons instant coffee
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup confectioners sugar
Ingredients

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup sour cream
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 3/4 cups flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons instant coffee
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup confectioners sugar
Step 1 - Getting the dry ingredients together
Sifting the cocoa powder
I first measure out all the ingredients - this includes sifting the cocoa powder as whenever I use the powder just out of the container it is clumpy as in the picture. So to make sure it combines the right way, I highly recommend sifting cocoa powder for any recipe.
In a medium sized bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, instant coffee, baking soda and the black pepper. Give this a mix and set it aside.

Step 2 - Mixing the wet ingredients
combining the wet ingredients
In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine the brown sugar and oil blending until well mixed. Add the sour cream, egg and vanilla and mix until all the ingredients are well blended. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and beat until well blended. Cover dough and refrigerate 3 to 4 hours or until batter is firm.
Step 3 - Making the balls and baking
Make 1 inch balls and roll in powder sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Once the batter has chilled it is time for the fun part! Time to roll some balls about 1 inch in size. Taking the 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and putting it in a shallow dish, roll the balls and then place them in the dish of sugar. Roll the balls until they are completely covered and gently shake off excess sugar. Place a few inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Once your sheet is full bake for 10-12 minutes or until the tops of cookies are firm and cookies have split. Do not over bake. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. And then Enjoy!
