Master Bedroom Renovation
At the old house the only room that wasn't completed was our master bedroom. It was on the agenda to do in the spring before we found out we had to move and dismantle the house. So after much consideration we decided that our bedroom would be the first to be done here at the new house. But we had to decide what we wanted to do...

The room itself was roughly 13'x14' with 3 windows, a closet and two door exiting into the hallway in two different locations. So in other words, a design nightmare! Where do you put a queen sized bed? The closet.. tiny in today's standards and only one plug socket for the whole entire room! Not to mention that both exterior walls had little to no insulation in them. OK we had our work cut out for us but Jon knew exactly what to do!
Instead of removing the paneling and taking down the nasty plaster and lath that covers the walls, Jon decided to leave the walls as is, cover them with a new 2"x4" wall, run all new electrics into the new wall, insulate it, cover with all new drywall and done! Best part about it we could recycle almost all the materials from what we salvaged at the other house! Besides the drywall that is. So that is exactly what we did!
For the plaster ceiling which was still in fair shape even though it had some signs of softening in spots, we opted to use the covering wallpaper made in the UK and sold at Home Depot. They have different patterns so we used the one replicating tin panels. We used this quite a bit at the other house and I loved the way it hid the wafer board ceiling in the kitchen and dining room. This we painted and placed repurposed boards from the other house that we took down as faux beams to give it a rustic barn like theme. Jon installed a ceiling fan which really is a fantastic addition to the room for circulating the air. The windows were replaced maybe 20 years ago (per the date on one of the labels) so they aren't new but newer so we opted to leave them as is for now. They all had to be reframed out as we added an additional 4 inches to the wall - this allowed us to create a shelf instead of a top molding above the window.
To accommodate our queen sized bed, we opted to close in one of the doors on the wall without the closet in it. Jon then ran additional wiring to this wall for more plug sockets as well as mounted wall lights for each side of the bed. This whole wall was then covered in wood we reused from Ariana's barn themed room from the other house. This we stained using the vinegar & steel wool stain I made using white vinegar so that the wood would take on a grey hue vs a brown one. We also ripped up the old dated shag carpet and took the room down to its bare wood floor. Because it was never finished and always covered with carpeting of some type it was in great shape but stained. Instead of sanding and refinishing it, we decided to paint it using paint we had left over from the other house.
The end result of the bedroom after decorating it with an Indonesian theme from items we have collected over the years is a beautiful and tranquil master bedroom complete with a
zen feel as it is clean and open. I call it my sacred space and find after a long day I love to retire to my finished bedroom.
