Hens checking it out
Our Sunday morning started with the building of a new roost for the hens and roos. We are a bit tight at the moment so we needed to use what we had. The goats have been clearing their habitat area where there are a lot of saplings that were the rights size to use in our project. It is nothing fancy but allows them all plenty of space and choices to roost on. Someday we may make something different but for now they like it!
Framing in the window
The next project for the coop was adding ventilation. This is being done via a large recycled window Jonathan got from his work - they were throwing 4 of them out! One man's junk is another man's treasure! The window was not the best but after a little TLC Jon made it as good as new! We decided to take out the one stationary door and replaced it with a frame for the window. He was able to use some 2x4s we had laying around so the project was all labor and no expense! Have to love them jobs!
After he covered the framed area with recycled plywood, he framed the window out with trim to secure it in place. I know it is a large window, but it is thermopaned and should provide a lot of solar heating in the winter months. The coop is placed facing East and will get the sun from morning until mid afternoon in the winter time - but it is shaded and out of the direct sun in the summer.
Room with a view!
Here is a view from the inside looking out. The chickens are going to love being able to see the sunrise! We will be covering the whole open area with chicken wire to keep out the unwanted pests but allow good ventilation of the coop. The shed itself has vent holes along the back that help to keep the air flow going through the inside.
So there we are for now... next we will be installing the slide door in the back and the chicken run. So be on the lookout for that update soon! Have a great day!
